PIIEFEIIEXCE AA’ITH CANADA. Attempts again are being made to arrange a preferential agreement between Canada and Australia. Two years ago a Canadian Alini*ter came to Australia for the purpose of conducting negotiations. Now an Australian Minister is in Canada for the same purpose. AVl;at led to a breakdown in the negotiations two years ago has never been clearly stated, but it- is understood that the Canadian Alinistrv wanted a wider preference than the Australian Arinistry was willing to concede. It is in order to get over that difficulty that the present negotiateions are proceeding. The ostensible object of preference is to keep trade within the Empire.
