The first test- match. New Zealand v. New South Wales, commenced this afternoon in beautiful weather, on a splendid wicket. There was a good attendance of spectators, £2OO being fallen at the gates. At the close of the day’s play New Zealand were all out for 141 after a poor exhibition, and New South Wales had lost 2 for 48. The showing made by tho New />ealaud team was a disappointing one. In what was regarded as ft strong tin.r side, only tour men reached double fißurcs. Hiddloston scored against the fast howlers, Everett and Hendry, with some, finely tinted late cuts. On the log side he played with confidence. Btikcr, another Wellington hat, reached 31 with careful phiy. McGirr hatted attractively for 23. The remaining batsmen, with 1 H exception of Alloo, never looked like making runs. With three-quarters ol an hour to hat the Australians lost two wickets, Punch being clean howled by the second ball of the innings. The howling and fielding of the Australians was ol a high order.
