From an even start. -MoDevitt quiea|y took the lead, but lie was never mole than a length ahead of Hannan. Hannan gradually overhauled bis opponent. and at about, half way the New Zealander was on level terms with the Australian. Then Hannan steadily drew away irom MeDcviit. and with nearly a mile to go be was several lengths ahead. With half a mile to go. Hannan was ten lengths in trout. McPevitt thou made a great effort to overtake Hannan. who. however, kept the lead, winning by twelve lengths. The time was 24mins. 11 sees. MoDevitt started off with much the quicker stroke, and throughout, he was rowing the faster, but shortoi. strokes, which seemed to lack powei. The Australian was at one stage troubled by the rough water, which Hannan negotiated well. Hannan started quickly, but be settled down to a low swing stroke, averaging only 26 to the minute. At the end of the race McDevitt said the. water was too rough for him, and he admitted that Hannan had won fair and square. Hannan expressed his intention to tg-y to arrange a match with Paddon for the world’s championship, hut said he would stipulate the M'aitemata course.
