EMPIRE PRODUCTS.
WAR OFFICE AIEAT. AUSTRALIAN AND N.Z. CABLE ASSOCIATION. (Received tin's day at 10.45 a.in.) LONDON, Fob. 27. A meat trade authority, interviewed, said that he would not have been surprised if rhe South American canned meat tender were fifty per cent lower than the lowest Dominion offer. Tho War Office's explanation indicates that the business was secured at approximately five shillings per dozen twelve o/. tins, which represents nothing less than dumping by foreigners, in order to retain business which they have so long been allowed to enjoy. Tho hopelessness uf the Empire’s producers . ever being able to meet such killing competition is illustrated by tho fact that even if the Dominion producers secured the meat gratis, they could not pack and lay down the goods in England for such a price. The Govern- } " mem's action mav he accepted as telling the Dominions that in the future,Sat least so far as canned meats are concerned, the Dominions need not apply. This is in distinct contrast to the policy of the United States which legislated against foreigners tendering for the supply of canned meats for its service';.
