Kirksoy, a member of the America team which visited New Zealand, has retired from the track panic on account of the position he holds as physical instructor and partly through action of the authorities in questioning his amateur status and in view of the nature of his employment. Kirksoy was informed that if he did not compete lie fore the Olympic trials the query would be waived. He now intends to attend the Olympic games a, a member of the Californian Rugby team. Her husband ivlio died 20 years ago was the first to get gold at Charleston. RUNAWAY MOTOR-TIU'CK. AUCKLAND, Pel,. L'-i. A somewhat spectacular runaway was. witnessed in iShorllaud .Street on Friday, when a large motor-truck, heavily laden with bags ol wheal, got out. of control and careered down the hill backwards in Lite direction of Queen Street. The truck had reached the vicinity of the Auckland Club, when the driver ai tempted to change gears, but the gears jammed. The truck at once commenced to run backwards. the hand-brake failing to hold the. heavy vehicle. By the time the foot-brake had been brought into play the truck had gained such speed that the driver was compelled to devote Ins attention to steering a course clear id traffic, while a pedestrian, with commendable presence of mind cheeked pedestrian’ India: crossing the Queen St. intersection, enabling the driver U> swing round into Queen St. and pull up on a level surface. .MENTAL PATIENT’S ESCAPE. AUCKLAND. February 21. An escapee from the Auckland Mental Hospital caused considerable excitement at the Newmarket and Remner.'i railway stations and at Green Lane- before he was finally captured.
