ALoldrum, at the Magistrate’s Court, Grey- j mouth, yesterday, on the information of a mine deputy, Alphonsus O’Donnell (Mr H. F. Don,gan) with in a jiart of the Paparoa eoal mine, where safety ; lamps are used, having matches in his 1 possession. Air Doogan said ho under- ! stood the defendant admitted the offence, and the information was laid more with the object of inducing the j men to realise the danger of carrying i matches in the mine than of scouring n heavy penalty. The defendant said ho was not aware that the matches were in his possession. A mate had borrowed a match from him that morning, and unthinkingly slipped the box back into defendant’s pocket without his knowledge. Defendant was the second last man to be examined by the deputy, and lie did not know until then that he had the matches. The man’s mate. Grant, eorrohoarted this statement. Mr Doogan said that he understood the facts wore as explained by the defendant, hut for the reason he had mentioned it was thought- de-
si ruble to go on with the information. The department did not claim expenses. The defendant was convicted and ordered to pay costs, 7s.
