R.D. MARTIN'S CASE. CHRISTCHURCH, Feb. 21. The trial of Russell Bytes Martin for the alleged theft of Union moneys, and making false declarations, was continued at the Supreme Court. The accused gave lengthy evidence, absolutely denying that he had stolen any money. In (it-- examination, lie said he realised he should not have used Ihe money of the Bakers’ Union to pay his salary as secretary of the Shop Assistants Union. He had every expectation that later the Union would reimburse him. He knew Mr Gray did not audit the balance sheet of the Rakers. Union, and that il was dishonest to advise the Union that Gray had done so. He would no think it .satisfactory if his money had been handled in the same way as he had handled that- ot the Bakers’ Union. He had intended to got Mr If. R. Best to audit- the books of the unions, and his name was placed as auditor on the balance sheets in nil good faith. The Court adjourned till to-morrow. MARTIN CASE. CH R ISTC'i J CECIL l-'eh. 27. The fourth day of the trial of I!. D. Martin saw further evidence called lor the defence. J. McCombs YEP., said from bis knowledge as cx-President of the Shop Assistants’ Union, .Martin so far from stealing £t!0l) from the Union as alleged. did not steal 900 pence, as the union never had it for him to steal.
