On the flagship Asama about 10 armed bluejackets and a mimboi of officers stood to attention on the quarter-duck. When a clarion call on the bugle announced sunset the officers and men stood to the salute, and tie flag was lowered to half-mast. It was suspended in that position while the ship’s hand played a verse of the Japanese National Anthem. When the music ceased the flag was hauled completely down, hut the sailors remained at the salute, until a verse oi “God Save the King,” was played.
