BAND CONTEST.
by TELECRAI'n —PER I'KKSS ASSOCIATION.]
CHRISTCHURCH, Feb. 19.
At the hand contest to-night, the first section of the B grade test was played. Tile playing in the test piece Arbroise Thomas’s "Alignon,” was surprisingly oven, and in this respect, it may be said to have excelled tlio I! grade contests held elsewhere in the Dominion. There was not one weak performance in the lot. Some of the hands treated the work rather heavily and the famous polacca, “I am 'Htania,” tested the cornet players severely. The bands generally treated the gavotte too heavily, and played it nil t lie slow side, the notable exception being the Onmaru Band, who gave a line rendering of that movement, hut failed in other respects. The whole of the solo work of the evening was good, and the concerted work was surprisingly good. The points will not be announced till very late on Thursday night, when the Own Choice Selection for the B grade will be played. To-day’s results are: — B Flat Cornet Championship, test piece, “Webers Last Waltz.” —W. Osborne (Ashburton) 88 points, 1: AY. Stevenson (Runanga) 87, 2; R. Ohlson (Christchurch Tramways) 86, and W.
