EAST INDIES TRADE.
WELLINGTON. February 19. The advisability of establishing a direct shipping service with the East Ii dies was considered by the Wellington Chamber of Commerce to-day, when the Committee pointed out that last year New Zealand imported £1,125,539 worth of goods from the East- Indies, and exported only £B9l worth. The Chamber adopted the following resolution:—“That the Council support tho proposal put forth by the Royal I’acket Navigation Coy. of Batavia for a direct shipping service between New Zealand, Java, Singapore, and other Eastern ports; but is not prepared to recommend support to a preferential tariff for goods from the Dutch East Indies.

The Scottish Monarch (5700 tons) created a new record for the port of W anganui to-night, by berthing at Castlef.lip wharf. The vessel will load a wool cargo lor Home. The port improvements effected of late will allow even larger vessels to berth safely.
