AUCKLAND, Feb. 17 An appeal to teachers to give groat attention to the simple virtues of neatness and accuracy was made by the Minister of Education (the Hon 0. J. Part-) in opening the Newton Central School. Mr Parr said that to-day not only were they turning out trained and certificated teachers at the rate of 1-00 a year, but they were allowing those teachers greater Freedom in carrying out the curriculum. There was a wide syllabus of subjects from which teachers might select, and to a large extent plan their own'scheme of work. That Irceilnm had perhaps gone too far. There uax evidence in some scltimis that the old virtues of accuracy, ilioroiightte-s. and neatness were forgotten. He found thill some inspectors anil teaclnrs had been giving marks to children for gelling sums nearly right. The pupils had gone about the problem with good method. They showed thev miller tood it. but some "merely technical error” of .subtractimt or addition bail given a wrong answer. “.Merely mechanical errors” anil "nearly right” would mu do in Queen street, in shop, in office, or bank.
