DEAN CAREW MEMORIAL

At Greyniouth yesterday alteruoon the opening of the Dean Carew Memorial School, took place, His Grace, Archbishop Mannix (of Melbourne) who had arrived the previous evening, performing the ceremony Impressively before a vast assemblage of people. A procession was formed at St. Patricks Church, headed by the Runanga Hand, and consisting of the Altar Boys, Hibernians, Marist Choir and school boys, and othe.r religious societies, followed by His Grace Archbishop Mannix, Their Lordships, I)rs McCarthy and Brodic, and a large number of visiting local clergy. On arrival at the School, His Grace blessed the exterior of the School. Ho was then presented with a silver key, with which he opened .the School, and blessed the interior. I Rain began to fall continuously, and j Rev Father Long invited the people to !he seated in St. Patrick’s Church where the remainder of the ceremony would he celebrated. The Church was filled to overflowing, hut seating accommodation was provided for every- J one present. The addresses delivered j by the reverend speakers proved most | interesting, and were listened to with j rapt attention. A collection was tak- 1 on in the Church and realised a total | of £-150, leaving a deficit of only £450 j on the building. Subsequently im- • presslve addresses were delivered by . Rev Father Long, Rev Father O’Connell, Mr H. F. Dongan. Rev T)r Kennedy. Archbishop Mannix, Or McCarthy (Bishop of Melbourne), Rev Bro. Herbert, and Bishop Tfrodie.
