POPLAR POOR LAW RELIEF.

GOY EKNAIFNT ACTION TO BE TESTED. U’BTKAUAN AND N.Z. CABLE ASSOCI-VoON. LONDON. Feb. 11 Mr Asquith i Feo! i.; declaration hat. been girtn prcra.i’.cr.cc: ;•* the newspapers, a:.2 '-.n. y.ro'.-onsd v.-sf divergent vie '- Air Asquith :j:I he intended to ask for a full discussion on Air AY heatIcy’s action re Poplar poor law relief. He believed there was not the slightest chance of the House countenancing it. Air Asquith said the Government’s action would lie tested. The Labour contention is concisely stated in the “Daily Herald” as follows When the Liberals studied Air Wheatley’s action re Poplar guardians they are hound to discover that this is a storm in a teacup. The Mond order which limited the amount of poor law relief in Poplar was issued in connection with an Act of Parliament in 1922. This Act was superseded in 1923. Sir A. Aland's order, always ineffective, became obsolete last vear. and is now rightly rescinded. "A!any have jumped to the conclusion that Afr Wheatley (Health Afinisler) had given the Poplar Guardians a free hand to distribute relief without stint. That is a ridiculous error. The general conditions governing poor law relief (rienrain unaltered. Poplar is subject to the same rules as other places.’’ The “Daily Express” characterises the development as a crisis of the first magnitude. It says:—“Air -MacDonald must reverse the decision, or face certain defeat.”

Tlie “Express" understands Air Asquitli is determined to press the issue to a vote.

The “Morning Post’s” political correspondent says:—“The Liberal leaders have found their decision to put the Socialists in office has grcatlv offeiidcd a large mass of Liberal opinion in the country.

The “Daily Telegraph” editorially observed that “a shattering blow has heen struck at the Government by a quarter wherefrom it. comes with most effect on the second day of its existence. IT the Government survives the incident, it will do so with fatally diminished prestige.”
