The invention consists in tin- utilisation of the advantages of both hot ami compressed air and steam. Both are produced by an interim] combustion motor of the Diesel engine type. The motor i.s fed wiib heavy oil. ’the new invention can he applied to existing lot-motives at a cost of 600 lire per horse power. When the vessel was en route from Oporto to Newfoundland, the whole crew except the captain and the cook wore prostrated by smallpox. .Simultaneously a teriiic storm broke out. For a fortnight the captain and cook handled the ship unaided. The sails and rudder were torn away, and the ship was leaking and about to tounder when :i steamer sighted her and rescued the crew.
