SWIMMING SPORTS.
The swimming carnival was held at the Municipal Baths last evening. Vnfortunately the weather turned out wet and damped the proeedings considerably. The rain. however. did not come in time to prevent a large attendance being present. The enclosure was very crowded in the earlier part of the evening, but as the night wore on and the rain became more persistent, the attendance thinned down considerably and very few remained within for the closing events of the programme. The Alunicipal Band was present, and at the opening stages rendered some selections, but the falling rain and file lack of cover prevented a full programme being rendered.
The baths were well lit by electric light, giving a good view of all that passed in the water and alanit the diving hoards. There was excellent light for the starting and finishing and thanks io the Electric Lighting' Coy these arangements could hardly have been improved upon. 'I ho officials of the Club under AFr A. If. Lawn were well organised and the programme was put through smartly. There were numerous competitors including several from Groymoutli and Boss. The arrangements for llio competitors wore good. Fires were kept going in the I -separate dressing rooms, and from 8.30 onward hot coffee and biscuits were provided for those competing. I All the events were well contested. , Several had to Is* run oil in heats. I There were some keen contests, and the times put up were good. Several juveniles showed good form. Ihe young ladies’ events were particularly well contested, the competition being keen. Altogether it was an excellent evening’s healthy sport very entertaining for the onlookers, and evidently much enjoyed by the competitors themselves.
