Starr, who rescued Miss .Movie Ellis from Afghanistan after she had been kidnapped from her father’s bungalow at Kohart. Mrs Starr is n nurse at the Mission Hospital, Peshawar. Five years ago her husband. Dr Vernon Harold Starr, was stabbed by frontier tribesmen there in her presence, and died of his wounds. Yet she set out in search of Miss Ellis last April without a male escort, armed only with fortitude and sympathy. For her action she was awarded the Knisar-i-Hind gold medal. The daughter of the Rev T. Russell Wade, a C'.M.S. missionary in India, she took up medical missionary work at Peshawar in 1913, 50 years after her father had started his labour? there. After her husband's death she came to England, hut was unable to resist the call of the Afghan hills.
