The “Guardian" editorially ,-ays an astonishing result has followed the relent controversy respecting the moratorium. Tim daily papers in the four cities invited leading commercial lawyers to express an opinion on the elfeet of Die moratorium on the statute ol limitations, which cancels debt., alI'ecled it left dormant for a certain period. Replies in the lour cities showed New Zealand lawyers are sharply divided on the essential point. Christchurch and Auckland lawyers stated emphatically that the moratorium suspended the statute of limitations. Dunedin and Wellington. including Sir Francis Bell, declares the moratorium did not im - pend the statute. It is therefore a fair deduction that half tile uivseis m the Dominion possibly advised their clients that they need not proceed against defaulting debtors till the moratorium expired. As 'the Attor-ney-General’s declaration shows such advice is absolutely erroneous, the appeal that Parliament repair the omission hy passing a short law retrospectively suspending the statute during the moratorium appears unanswerable.
