UNHAPPY RUSSIA.

AN ENGLISHMAN'S STATEMENT.

The “Daily Mail” publishes a statement l.v an Englishman who has just returned from Russia. He says he had a glimpse ol hell and describes the wide-pread suffering and hunger which the iiol'hevik-s’ savage misgovernment has brought upon the unhappy land. Bolshevism is a rule which corrodes humanitv and is the prelude to an even greater tragedy. Russia is on the verge of a new convulsion which may split her into fragments and plunge her hack into barbarism, after an appalling massacre in which thousands will necessarily be involved. Lenin’s death has crystallised the factional dissentions within the Bolshevist administration. The leaders are divided among themselves. Jews are in control. The voice of the Russian people is still feeble and inarticulate, hut is being heard against the Jews The nest inevitable phase is a bloodv drama in Moscow. There is o nation-wide programme, the peasants throughout the country whispering a battle cry which they believe came from Lenin’s lips. Lenin during his last davs was bereft of intelligence and

crawled about his room like a beast, apologising to furniture for his misdeeds and shouting repeatedly “God Save Russia and kill the Jews.” Superstitous peasants received this as a supernatural message showing them tiie way out of bondage. The warning iias s;ent a shudder throughout Israel. Jews are already on the move, fleeing northwards from minor pogroms in Ukraine, and clamouring to depart to the United States and Palestine. Emigration depots on the Baltic are full of Jews awaiting permission to sail to America. Tiie shadow ol the coming pogrom has blighted the Jewish dream of world domination. Only the helpless remain in their homes and are in a pitiful state of terror. The majority arc concentrating their time, energy and money in saving their skins and to avoid the deluge of blood which is clearly coming. Russia has thus entered a now ferment. Leading spirits, Zinovieff and Kameneff are Jews. The third, Statin, is Armenian and willingly follows their lead. Against this trio stand Tchitcherin, Rykoff and Sapranolf who are bitter anti-Semitics. Trotsky although a .Jew, knows the army is strongly anti-Jcwish and is enviously Regarded 'as sentimentally and politically anti-.Tewish. It is believed he will not find a pogrom distasteful. Jews hold ninety per cent of Government posts and have ousted Russians tit every opportunity. LONDON, Feb. 1. In the “Daily Mail,” the Englishman. continuing his story, descriptive of Russia’s lurid conditions, says:— “Anti-Bolshevism and anti-Semitism are inextricably mingled in the minds oT the Russian workers and peasants, who carnot separate evils of the present autocracy from their traditional hatred of the Jews, whose influence and domination lias increased since Moscow went “Red.” The staff of the Foreign Office at Moscow consists almost wholly of Jews. Many Jews hate also found lucrative posts ;n the tnililary department, but comparatively few of them are combatant officers. A Jew is at the head of the Air Force. Then tiie majority of the new traders in Russia are .Tews, whose adroitness in taking every commercial advantage of Russia’s misery lias embittered the people. The Jews appearing in the restaurants, opera ami theatres are obviously well fed, while the others are starving. Tim Jewish women are ostentatiously loaded with jewellery, which is their legacy from the old regime. The Jews are widely accused of profiteering iu food and houses and several Jews have been shot for illegal extortion. The majority ol them, however, escape justice, even after an arrest'. The Jews who are in authority, are. almost without exception, Atheists, anti it is them who have authorised the looting ol synagogues daily, which shows their contempt for the religion of their fathers. The rural Jews, on the contrary, are orthodox, but this would not save them in a pogrom. The Russian peasant views them all alike. Tiie influential Jews, seeing the signs of an approaching Limn! hath, have strengthened the Moscow garrison with trusted troops, anil they are preparing a savage offensive against till the hike-warm Communists .particularly tho students who have supported the Opposition party.
