The death took place of Mr Joseph Caliari, son of Mr and Mrs Joseph t'aliari of Kaliieri. on Saturday night at 10 o’clock, after a long illness. Deceased was a native of Fox’s and 32 years

of age. A popular young man, he leaves many friends throughout the district who will hear of his decease with very sincere regret. He leaves a father and mother, respected residents of Kanieri, two sisters, and two brothers, to mourn their-loss.

Mr .T. Behan, contractor for the second tunnel at bake Coleridge, had an interview at Christchurch on Friday with F. f.angboin. district engineer of the Public Works at Christchurch. Mr <l. Behan expects to get part of his plant on loan from the Department, and does not anticipate any difficulty in getting the rest ot it. He left for Wellington that night. He stated that ho would have no trouble in obtaining sufficient labour. Thirty men are in the contract with Mr J. Belmn to construct the tunnel. They will engage extra labour when necessary. They have twenty-one months in which to complete and they will get a bonus of £SO a week for eompiloting before the due date, and will bo penalised £IOO a. week if they go over that date.

Speaking at Horowlionua mi Friday, the Hon 11. F. Bollard relorred to the way in which returned soldiers had met their obligations to the Government. Many people, be said, bad been under the impression that much of the repatriation money would never he repaid. Those who had held that opinion were very wide of the mark, for out of £2.000,000 more than 71 per cent, had lieen repaid. That was a splendid record. (Applause). There were, said Mr Bollard, some who had either not l**on in a position to repay their loans, or who had neglected to do so, but I am glad to say that they, especially the latter, are in the minority. This is a fine testimony to the honesty of New Zealanders.
