GERMAN NEWS.
AUSTRALIAN AND N.Z. CARLE ASSOCIATION GERMAN AEE A IBS. LONDON, January 22. The “Daily Chronicle's'’ Berlin correspondent sitys Germany'.- most serious present trouble is unemployment, which has produced a more terrible state of affairs than the experience iii any European country, except Russ.a in modern times. At leu.-t three million workers arc entirely unemployed in occupied and unoccupied Germany and are receiving a meagre unemployment dole of four sliidiugs weekly for a bachelor and sovvii shillings for a married man. Half a million Germans in two hundred towns are subsisting entirely on one free meal daily at soup kitchens. A recent medical examination of Berlin school eiiildioD. showed two out of live attended without food. Six thousand hoys were shfi'tless and thirty .thousand hare footed, despite the wintry weather. This resulted in an alarming increase in children's diseases. The majority of those fully employed in industries are miserably paid. Mean-
while agrarians, wholesale dealers and
r middlemen are prospering exceedingly, passing on the taxation in tin* shape of inflated prices. While the Government is controlled by such interests, it is powerless to remedy the present scandalous state of affairs.
