LATEST REPORTS. (Received this dav at 12 noon). LONDON. Jan. 19. Reports of the elfoets of the strike are slid very eoiillicting. It is claimed at the olliees of the railway managers that a vast majority of the national union of drivers and firemen remain loyal to the I'nion. A few here and Hi ere struck ill sympathy with Bromley's union, but most id them repot i.ed for work.
Other reports state that at Warrington, members of the two bodies made a common cause in striking, and at Crewe, the National I'nion men arc acting as pickets. At London, while Paddington station is congested with derelict main line trains, the situation at other London termini is not so bad. Officials are hopeful of being able to keep a restricted service runnin^. The underground railways, trams ami busses are crowded to their fullest capacity this morning and motor cars are employed in bringing worviis to tile city. LONDON, Jan. 21. At midnight Mr Bromley's union abandoned their engines. It is reported that many National Union men at Preston, Newport and Glasgow also struck in sympathy. The Ministry of Transport holds n secret organisation in readiness for instant operation in the event of a serious threat against, the nation’s food supply.
