“[ do not think that the change in the course of the river at Hokitika will be of any service to that town, or that the depth ol 15 loot now on the bar will remain long,” declared Captain F. \Y. Cox (harbor-master at Grey mouth), yesterday, when an “Argus” reporter drew his attention to the fact that the recent Hood that caused the river to change its course, from a fairly straight run to tin; mouth id the harbour, to the noith side under the wharves. '1 he trouble is,” continued Captain Cox “that the river when it ran straight to the hai . gave a fairly good scour and the result. was that there was always a tail' depth of water on th * bar. Now, however, the river in scouring along the waterfiont, will have to follow the curve in the north training wall, and will swing right across to the south wall, when it .readies the harbour mouth, thus losing all velocity and scouring power. The best thing they can have in Hokitika is the river in a central course to scour the bar. A little dredging will make a channel up to the wharves and will give ihem all the depth they will need to get small ships in. An’old K«ld dredge would do the work, and the silt could lie tipped over the north traini’ng wall, which it would thus strengthen considerably.” 1,0 Hoy, MacEogan, and other reliable oily canvas coats, from 67s {>! to 72s tid.
