Mr Dalgleish having satisfied himself that lime in fairly liberal riuantities will give good results, is now continuing his experimonts with a view to determining the minimum quantity of lime per acre that will ho elfoetivo. There is a good deal of limestone in Westland, and at TCoiterangi a kiln has been constructed capable of providing all the lime required. not only for that district. l>tit Kokatnhi as well, and these two districts. which arc usually considered as (me. form the largest settlement in Westland. There is another kiln at floss, about twenty miles south of Hokitika, hut from there to .lackson Hay no limestone has .-o far been discovered. and tile distance from Ross to Ifi’-rihaii and Wntaroa. tin? two most important settlements south of Hokitika. makes the i ost of the lime almost i rohibitive. iso wonderful, however. is the response of the land to him' that a keen agriculturist stated that no farmer from the southern districts .should neglect when visiting the i hief centre to take hack a few hags of lime with him. The daitying industry in Westland, though established in some districts for a number of years, lias made slow progress, but there are signs of a general awakening to its possibilities, and in a few years that part of the Dominion will contribute substantially to the tital output of dairy produce.
