A united press message fdotn Peking states that the first division of tho regular Hunan troops ■ stormed Supu, and plundered the village. According to reports received by ‘-he American Legation, they also attacked the American Mission of the Passionist Fathers, which is a Catholic Order. They fired upon two of the American mis-ionaties, and riddled the American Hag. The advices declare the soldiers are under the orders of General Hovae Tstui. commanding the Chinese Inland Province of Hunan. These orders are said to have been to destroy the mission. and kill “foreign devils.” The troops, without warning, opened fire, riddling the clothing of two of ‘he missionaries, who miraculously veto uninjured. The latest reports indicate that tho troops withdrew, and Supu is now apparently quiet, under tho control of the local officials. A strong protest has been made by tin* American minister. SEN YAT SEN’S AIM. NEW YORK, Jan. 11 The New York “Times” correspondent- at Shanghai reports the Amediean minister, Mr Sehurman. has arrived there after an interview with Dr Sun Vat Sen. and other Chinese lenders n Canton. Mr Sehurman int imated that- J an appeal imiv ho made to- the Ameri* (tin Government io call ut>6n all tho warring Chinese factions to meet ill conference for the purpose of ending the long strife and restoring the country to a peaceful condition. Dr Sun Tat Sen has proposed, this scheme. He is now seeking ‘endorsement rrom the various Tehueliuns (military governors). Chambers cf Commerce, students’ organisations, and Lahti nr groups. A tear is felt however that the. Peking Government will react unfavourably, even if assured, that American mediation could he secured. Dr Sun Yat Sen. meantime, lias promised Mr Sehurman that he will abandon, temporarily, at least, any plans to take forcible control of the Canton Customs.
