The Hokitika river has been in very high llood of late. The liver was at it-: highest on', Saturday night late, when the low-lying pails of the town wen under water. All day yesterday ibo river ran with great velocity. 'I ho main stream yesterday began to find its way hack to tlie old channel along the wharf. The hank near the mouth of the river began to melt away lapidly. The change in the course of the liver, so long desired so tar as the local berthage is concerned, appears to have beet* due to the main hotly of the river taking a new course from Kanieri,- -leaving the north hank, and turning over to tile south hank. At Howard’s on the south side, the hulk of the water made a. set hack again to the north side. This appears to have overcome the force of the mid-channel which has for so long carried the main body of the river waters, and G o result appears to be the return of the river to its original habitat along the wharf. When the flood waters subside a clearer idea of the results will he obtainable, and it will then he seen it i> desirable to do untiling further to total'll the water l»y the wharf as a reason for inducing more regular shipping to the port. In any ease representations should be made to the shipping companies as also the owners ol saiilng or auxiliary craft, to secure, regular trading to the port for the export of timber etc. to Nelson and the North island.
