(From a Correspondent). At Wat arm uii Saturday Oth. January, the Mataimii annua! .school picnic, which li:t;l been postponed the two precious days wa» held and proved a decided success. In the evening a dance was tendered .'lt amt Mrs Wieblitz on the eve of their departure fiom the district. Mr T -Mcliride in mahing the presentation (•n behalf of the settlers, spoke of Mr and Mrs Wieblitz’.s good qualities and of their pioneer spirit. Mr Wieblitz. he emphasised, carved a home out of nature's hush and made it into smiling paddocks. Tie also spoke on Mrs Wieblitz.s’ good fellowship amongst her lady friends during her stay in South Westland. Ml Wieblitz in replying on behalf .of Mrs Wieblitz auirl himself, said, too many good things had been said about them. TTe had made many dear Iricmls and they were sorry to leave Them, hut he was moving north for the betterment of his offspring as ke felt that a good education was now-a-days the key to the youth of X’etv Zealand. -Mr Jack Butler had charge of the | Hour for dancing, and Mr W. Joyce supplied splendid music, which greatly added to the success of the evening. The settlers at Mataimii are looking forward to the annual race meeting which is to ho held on January 17th. All provi-ion is l>eing arranged for the catering on that day. and the course is in splendid condition. There are not many local horses being schooled, but it is hoped the northern racing men will come, south and compete and they will be assured of a good day’s sport.
