The Westland Trotting Club’s meeting is taking place to-day, the weather being overcast. Some time ago we referred to some exceptionally long grass grown in the vicinity of Hamilton (says the "Waikato Times”). A good story is told concerning the erection ot‘ poles on a hydro-transmis-sion line not 100 miles from Kltetahuna 'says an exchange). A party was erecting poles for the Government on contract, and half-holidays and Sundays did not appear in the programme. One Sunday the gang commenced work on a certain property, the. owner ol which was strong on Sabbath observance, lie appeared

on the scene and registered a mil I protest, which was entirely ineffective The work was continued. Seeing lies, the farmer had recourse to a more pointed argument. He rounded up a rogue Hereford (mil and turned it into the paddock where the men were engaged. There was no more work that day.

By means of forged correspondence a man with a remarkable knowledge of hanking methods lias delrauded the head office of the English, Scottish, and Australian Bank of C 2500. Then tic man drew I'WiOO in notes of various detiomina tints, and officials or the hank did not discover until several hours later that the communication received, presumably from the Sydney office of the hank, hud in reality been sent by a person who hv some mean- had become possessed of the hank’s private nulo. A line assortment <»i tallies* now frocks, millinery, jumpers and underclothing just received. Also a fine lot of men’s really good raincoats at very reasonable prices. Call and sec them. W.
