ARAHURA VALLEY SPORTS.

(From a Correspondent). The above sports, postponed from AA'ednesday took place on Thursday, Jan. 3rd. The weather although not too favourable in the morning improved considerably a- the day wove on. Tile officials, as usual. were .-.i their various posts and the events passed off well up to the announce, l times, there not being a dull moment the whole afternoon. The entries although not so large as last year, prof* that the sports arc very popular among the- competitors. The various ("'cuts ill the chopping ring were well contested. proving that the haudicapper (Mr Fitzgerald) was well tip to his work, while in the cycle race Air TV. - kins handicapped the riders so well that wheels only separated the placed men. Tho children's races were very exciting and the Committee gave every child a rash prize. The competitors give the starter (Air Richards) „tv-u I credit for the able ami efficient iiciii-n r in which lie dispatched the various j fields, and recommended that, othr i j ( luhs would do well to follow his methods. The Committee desire to thank the people who so kindly donated tiophies and Air Ditley for the use if his paddock and all those that in any wav assisted to make the gathering a success. The results were as follow: Maiden Chop.—L. Hahn 1. R. Hewer 2. 5 started. Upright Chop.— D. Bannister 1, R. Bradley 2. 7 started. Handicap Chop.—P. Hewer 1, C. Cook 2, R. Bradley 3. Ten started. Cycle Race.—Hutchison 1, P. Griffen 2. .1 laussmann 3. Fastest time was .secured hv Haussmanh. -'fine started. Married Ladies’ Race. —Airs Atkinson I, Mrs AlcSaveney 2. Single Ladies’ Race.—Afjss Hewlett 1. Miss Ditley 2. .Married Aten's Race.—Bannister and Richards a dead heat. Stepping.—Aliss Smith. At the conclusion of the ahov-s events a sweep stake chop, loin log, was held, in which Mr AI. AA’allacO (manager of the Arahura Dairy Factory) was the winner by 10 seconds This was the chop of the day, the remarkably fast time of 2min -losee being put up by the winner, which proves that he can handle an axe nearly a* good as he can handle the suppliers' errant.
