Whilst many thousands of people were watching the .Mnrdi Gras procession in the main streets this morning an alarm of fire caused a diversion of traffic to tin: vicinity of the Post Office, opposite which a two-storey wooden building was sending forth smoke and flames. The outbreak was confined to the upper storey which was completely ('’.tiled. Good work by the fire brigade narrowly prevented the spread ol the flames to other buildings, including the Clarendon Hotel. The sufferers through, the lire are D. c. l.ang and Son, indent agents, and AVarren. photographic studio. The building, owned by Laings, was insure,! for L'2.7.000. the stock for L‘2lloo, and office furniture for £370: and Wraren’s stock and effects were insured for Cloft, all in the Hartford Office. The fusing of an electric light wire is .supposed to ho the origin. HEAVY WEATHER, CHRISTCHURCH. Dec. 28. Following a soaking downpour overnight a heavy northwest gale raged to-day. uprooting trees in seveta! places and blowing part ni the root u'7 a house in Lyttelton.
