BRITISH & INTERCOLONIAL EXHIBITION.
There was a very fair attendance at the Exhibition yesterday, particularly last evening when a large number were attracted to hear the Grevinmith Male Choii . " hick made a very acceptable visit to Hokitika. The morning was wet. lint the afternoon and evening were fine, and those present at the Exhibition seemed to lie enjoying the displays, which are being added to daily. Three or four fresh exhibits were installed, ami others are being put in position to-day. including dried fruits from Australia, and artificial limbs made by the soldiers in hospital at Christchurch. These exhibits are being staged in the Gorge avenue, off the Drill Hall. The Male Choir from (Iroytiiotilh submitted a very pleasing programme. The concerted numbers were all enjoyed very greatly, while the part songs, (jiuiiuettes and solos wore all very acceptable to the audience. Ike whole entertainment went with a pleasing swing, and was greatly pn.to.ved. The Hon Michel returned thanks on behalf of tin' Exhibition Committee and Mr Smith (conductor) in acknowledging the appreciation extended congratulations to the town on the excellent Exhibition provided. There is on view at the Exhibition embalmed in ice. the largest i|iiinnat salmon yet caught on the Coast. It was caught at Lake Kanieri yesterday hv Mr Cooke, the caretaker, and weighs 4Jibs. The lish was frozen in ice at the Westland Central Dairy Factory by .Mr H. 4. Barry, where the freezing olaiii is now in lull working order. Accommodation booking in town over the Christmas holidavs promises to be heavy. The Exhibition authori ties are advertising the week’s programme in the northern papers, and also in the Christchurch daily papers, were the railway fares etc. arc notified. A booklet of fares and tariffs has been circulated all through the Dominion, through the lonrist Offices. Cook's tours. E.S.S. Coy’s offices ami Chambers of Commerce. Copies of Hie booklet may lie had at the Exhibition office to ]iost to friends. The radio parlour at the Exhibit ion is now operating every night. East night Hokitika was in touch with Wellington land, Auckland concerts, and about 10 o'clock a Sydney concert was picked tin. Following the visit of the Christchurch Concert Party at Christmas will conic the Hnekett Troupe id lady gymnasts from Ciiristchtireli. who will appear in the Orpheus Theatre for four consecutive nights. opening on Boxing Night. The troupe intmhers about l’i ' people, and gives a line performance varied hv many interesting turns. The company arrives on Xmas Day, and special stage arrangements will he made for performances on Homan rings el.", 'ihe troupe was one el the features at the Kxhihilion at Christchurch a year ago. when they gave it round of entertainments, making several appearances. The entertainment to he given here will he a decided nnvcllv. and as the town will lx) crowded over race week large attendances are assured. Christmas time will be tile brighter tins year because ol the Kxhihition. It is understood Father Christmas will make a s|>ecial advent to the buildings on Xmas Eve. and hold a juvenile levy to mark the special occasion. The engagement of Derry's Inmoiis hand is exciting much interest all along the ( oast.. This line organisation, over forty strong, is to be here lor jubilee time, ft is the finest military hand in the Dominion. During the stay in Hokitika two performances nightly will he given in the Orpheus Theatre. I lie hand has a New Zealand reputation, anil on a reeenti visit to Wellington thousands Hocked to hear the three programmes rendered publicly hv the hand. Christinas music will he a leaturc at. the Exhibition. The Christchurch Concert Party will render a special programme at the Orpheus llieatre on Ninas Eve, while on ( nristnias night at the Printess Theatre there will be a Christmas musical festival. In addition to the Concert party I f:nil Christchurch. tile Exhibition Cboir will render three choral numbers, and smite pari songs, and the Hokitika Orcliotra will further supplement the programme. It should prove a vcr\ memorable concert. I Up to Friday, lltli. January there is an extra daily train service from j Greymouth to Hokitika, leaving the • former town at 1'2.-til and arriving j here at 2.15 o'clock. The ordinary trains at 8 a.m. and -K-I9 p.m. will also run. .Suitable trains | from Hokitika return north daily, the hist train being at 19.5 p.m. after the Exhibition Entei taininents. A monster Httnaitga picnic to Ho.titika is being fixed lor Saturday, Jan. 19th. This will he followed it weeklater hy Oreymniith Waterside workers’ picnic on Jan. 20th. Heefton school and Greymouth school picnics to Hokitika are arranging dates subsequent to the 12th. pmx. All through January daily cooking demonstrations by gas will be given at the Exhibition building on Stand 121. where the Hokitika Gas Coy. is installed. There is a very line display of gas appliances now installed. the uses of these .will he tlilt v illustritlcd and free lectures given by Miss I oddhunter of'Christchurch, specially engaged hv the Gas Coy. tor lecturing and demonstrating purposes. It is interesting to record that all cooking a , the luncheon and tea roams jit _ tin* j Exhibition is now done by Gas i ,f ’ m j appliances supplied hv the Hokitika | Gas Coy to the Exhibition authorities.
