Complaint- were made nr the meeting of the Waikato Hospital Board that a number of contributing local bodies bad not yet paid a reasonable portion of tlieir levies, although eight months of the financial year had passed. Mr A. (I. Dent, said that the farmers throughout the Waikato were doing well, and that if they were nV able to pay their rates to tile local bodies now they never would bo able to pay them. Through striking a horse the 10.1 p.m. lira in from Hokitika to (■leymouth on Tuesday was 34 minutes behind time, when il arrived in (irev. The horse was struck in a cutting between Kiimara Junction ami Tereinakau Bridge, and fell on a culvert, the carcase getting beneath the engine, from which it took some time to remove it.
Tho acceptances for Ihe Hokitika races arc a record. The list which uJosed last night include-, practically all the horses nominated at the outset. In no less than four events out of the eight all horses entered have accepted. The withdrawals in the other events are very light. The good fields which the acceptances promise should ensure excellent sport. At a meeting of the Committee of the Cluh last night final arrangements for the meeting were concluded. Ihe members of the Committee expressed satisfaction at the promising outlook for the meeting.
