THE EXHIBITION.
HA ST E XING PREP AK A TlO N S With only two days to go to the opening function, the preparations for the nig display to be made on Saturday are being hastened, with all possible speed. Yesterday was a very busy day, many additional exhibitors arriving, white goods continue to poor in. To-day the buildings are no less animated, but everything points to good work being achieved, and the big show being ready for inspection on Saturday afternoon at the appointed hour. The favourable impressions formed a few days ago as to the general idea of the big display are confirmed by the daily progress of the preparations. I lie show is going to he a womleriul one. Not the least remarkable is the great variety which will be presented. The range of goods covers all kinds ol manufactured articles, and the displays are no less varied. “A good show” seems to he the all-round verdict- of those who have had the opportunity of inspecting the exhibition 111 its incomplete state. The Railway Department, is doing all it can in the mutter of time-table arrangements to meet the requirements of the probable traffic. It was repi'esent-ed for instance this week, that the Christmas Eve train service for Ross was not satisfactory, and the result-is that a convenient train w ill lie put on for the afternoon, enabling southern visitors to come to Hokitika, see the Exhibition, and return home the same evening.
The first school day has been fixed for Tuesday next when the Kanieri, Woodstock, and Riinu schools arc expected to attend. Scholars accom-
panied by their teachers, and so conducted through the Exhibition will he admitted free. Any of the district schools desiring a similar privilege should communicate a convenient date to the Secretary of the Exhibition, when the best arrangements possible will lie made to meet requirements.
Those who are wise will secure their season tickets before Saturday. as there is certain to he a rush at the last moment. To avoid disappointment the earliest application should he made. The value of the season tickets sold now approximates £lllO. so it w;L he seen the season ticket is going to be very popular, it is certainly a very cheap rate for sight-seeing at the Exhibition over the period the big display will he running. Visitors to the Exhibition should not fail to visit upstairs in the Town Hall, where there will be centred a number of very line exhibits, including excellent displays by the Forestry Service and the Agricultural Department, as well as a remarkably fine Art display of pictures from Nelson, Christchurch. Dunedn and elsewhere. A fine o.<! painting of the late R. •). Seddon by a London artist- has been loaned by Air T. E. Y. Seddon. Many novelty exhibits and stalls will he found along the various avenues. Those will supply a very interesting variety. 'Souvenirs of the Exhibition as also of the ’Xmas season will be on sale.
The town is beginning to deck itsell out) in greenery for the festive day 011 Saturday. Many tree terns and other forestry wealth are being used lor decorative purposes, and when the hunting is added the streets will become very bright and gay. Exhibition time is going to he a very bright time. The approach to the Exhibition building front in Tailored Street, is very impressive. Mr Menzies. the scenic artist has finished oil the mountain scape in a maimer which holds the attention of all who view it. Seen at night under the llood lights thrown on to the building the scene is greatly enhanced, and stands out as a- very brilliant aiM unusual sight- The scheme is most appropriate and has been carried out most capably.
