CROWD IN TEARS.
LONDON, Oct. Iti. AVliili* n cylinder containing ammonia gas was being used in a idiigerator at a butcher's shop in Queen s Komi, Brighton, yesterday, a valve bkuv oil' and the gas spread through the shop into the street. Passers-by were attached by a tickling sensation in the throat and irritation of the eyes which caused them to weep freely; the assistants and customers in the shop rushed out wiping tears from their eves as they ran; and soon a large- crowd attracted by the commotion were taking part in the tear-shedding scene belore they realised what was happening. The lire brigade arrived and they too were reduced to tears, but altet pitting on life-saving helmets they were able to enter the building and stop the escaping gas. The manager of the shop and several assistants were rendered almost speechless lor several hours. RAFFLES IN COURT. .PARIS, October Jl. Tho name of Rallies was used solemnly in the Paris criminal court to-day when an alleged burglar named Hordes was charged in connection with a number of lobbcries in Paris. Borden, it was stated, used to write with a diamond on the window-pane or n mirror the name Raffles every time lie broke into a house. He does not seem to have possessed the skill ol the real Raffles, for his various burglaries were identified by the French police owing to the number of finger-prints.
