A recent visitor to South Westland writes:—The whole of South Westland appears to he in line fettle just now, and the pastures compare more than Itnonrahlv with those elsewhere. It is apparent, however, that cultivation will have to become general shortly, particularly around Wataroa, where some of the pastures appear to he exhausted. Clover is grown in abundance, and a few very fine paddokes of Italian ryegrass are sect), one near Ft rgttson's being particularly noticeable. Several farmers in the Wataroa distiiet now work four and six horse teams regularly, and one fanner has a motor tractoi in use. The cost of obtaining lime from Ross is prohibitive, benig C 3 18s per ton to Wataroa and £5 to Wailio, where the land as yet supports few dairy herds, although at least its good as that further north.
