British and Intercolonial Exhibition at Hokitika.
PREPARATIONS FOB OPENING DAY. Work at the large Exhibition building will be in full swing this week. Tin, exhibitors are now clotting their show stalls, ami. there is the promise of some fine displays. The Hokitika Gas Coy. promises to have one of the he-1 exhibits at the Exhibition. When the cooking demonstrations are in progress next month it will he a great cent re of attraction for the busy housewife who will have the opportunity of learning how to handle gas cooking appliances to the best effect. This week some of tin? large Canterbury stands will be taking shape, a good deal oi the uriefia! having arrived at the wee!; end. The main entrance to the Exhibition is going to he strikingly effective. .Mr .1. Meiizics G now engaged decorating lie facade, ml which will he depicted a section ol the Southern Alps, with Mount Cook' towering over the subordinate peaks. The outline for this devolutive scheme as mnv viewed suggests that an excellent ofl'ei t will be produced. Additional local color will be given to the general scheme by the depiction of an electric train emerging from the tunnel and rushing westward. Alto-
gether the Exhibition front will be very appropriately designed, and Ite quite a distinctive feature of the Exhibition. Immediately within Ihe outraiiee will le the ferneiy, where something, appropriately sylvan and decidedly Coastlike will be shown. The scheme is now being worked out, and is advanced stifficiently to indicate that the display will be very effective. The court will add also to the cooling of the atmosphere. the playing fountain reaching nearly to the tool', and helping materially to reduce the high temperature ovi.u quile a considerable radius.
The Wr-idund Court proper, with its butler and cheese, its wool and flax, and dairy produce, should press vi-ilois that the- district does not live by timber and gold alone. The district ha; its greatest progress wrapped up its the future as the pastoral pursuits are developed. 'lhe display in this regard is going to be .something out of the otiiinarv, and quite worth while as mat king the potentialities ol the districts. Even residents of Westland will have a new vision brought- home ,o them of wliil Hie future of the district will be under a- more sustained s\ tom of pastoral development and prelim tion.
Within the main annexe the Greymouth Court will be oil.' ol the liist exhibits to claim attention. This important t oast. Court is being organised by Mr E. I. bord, the son :,1 a .-cmlonian who, wete he with us tu(!,iv. would have been heart and .soul in the Exhibition movement. Mr Lord is none the loss enthusiastic about tin task given him. and although the time is short, will be able to make a brave display. A coal arch is to be a prominent feature of this exhibit, aim the erection i.-, to be put in band rein next week end. The jubilee celebration period has keen fixed for Jaautry 9th. to ll>th. This will ’ne a special occasion u> do honor to the pioneers of GO years ago. A programme i f entertainment. on lines similar to that of ron wild, the GO years iuhtlee was celebrated, lias been drawn up, and ijiiite a festive lime should result.
