The Public Works Department has made arrangements with a flreymouth carrier to deliver the timber at the required site for the erection oi W aikukupa bridge, South Westland. As soon as the timber is on the ground the work of erection is to he put in hand.

Timber merchants say that while present supplies of timber aie in excess of the demand there are indications that prices will harden shortly owing to the increase dcost ot L-lling and transport. One Christchurch merchant declared that timber was becoming harder every day to obtain, as millers had to go into the rusts'll coni, try to get it. lie said that his him had to tow logs tot 1 seven miles on l.ake Brunner, and the tramway con traction for the mills was becoming expensive. In connedinti with the break in tin electric light supply on Saturday night, the Hokitika Gas Company lost no time in seeing that an adequate gas supply veas available for the town throughout the period of interruption. The gas holder was quite equal to the emergency with the result that those having gas appliances for lighting suffered no inconvenience through the interruption. It is understood that there was quite a "run’’ on gas mantles to equip discarded burners. Several premises in Rovcll Street were as brilliantly fit ns usual where the gas service was intact. The local gas Company has been established here now over fifty years, and it is the aim of the management to give the host service possible. V hat can he done with gas is going to la' specially demonstrated at the forthcoming Exhibition. The display by the Hokitika Gas Company will he one of the best stands in the large building, and will include nil kinds of appliances for lighting, cooking and healing.
