The "Times," in a leader, says fTiat. it is the urgent duty of the British Government to safeguard British and European interests in view of the extraordinary situation which has arisen through the creation of what is virtually a new political economic unit in a wealthy region between unoccupied Germany and France. France lias chosen to carry out a policy, culminating in an agreement with the Ruhr industrialists,s in the face of emphatically expressed disapproval of Britain. From an Inter-Allied viewpoint she lias shaken the foundation of the Treaty of Versailles. The general question of reparations has obviously been postponed indefinitely. The French must accept the consequences of their own deliberate action. What no British Government can do is to forego her claims in Europe.

Nov. 29 At the National Insurance scheme inquiry, representatives of all the friendly societies examined stressed the heavy calls upon them from the mining districts for sick pay.
