DAMAGE BY DEER.
ACTION' BY THE GOVERNMENT. As a result of numei-oits, protests from farmers as to the damage being done to their properties by deer, the Government has removed protection on those animals in certain portions of the following acclimatisation districts, in which districts deer are considered to he most numerous:
Nelson. Marlborough. North Canterbury. AA'aitaki. Westland. Otago and Southland. This means that any person may now kill deer within the areas ill which protection has been removed at. any time without a license, subject, of course, to the consent of the owner or occupier of the properly. It was. at the same time, realised that the nuisance would not he overcome solely by the removal ol protection and a grant of £l.llOO. has therefore, been made by t.lie Government to assist .settlers in, these distikts, in the thinning out of the deer. This amount has been divided amongst the 7 districts concerned, in propoition to Hie approximate number of deer in each district, tine-third ol the amount is available for the above Acclimatisation Societies at the rati- of Is for every animal killed by or on behalf of these Societies ill those portions of their districts u herein protection lias not been removed.
