“CROWNING DISTINCTION" OF HIS CAREER.

October Sir Thomas Eipton. in receiving yesterday. with Sir -lames Bell, a former l.ord Provost, the freedom of the City oi Clasgow. iecalled hi-. humble birth and early business life in that city and declared lie regarded this honour as the crowning distinction of his career. Referring to the I'nited States, lie said his ui-sijeiatioii with that country began at an early aye. and it was gratifying to him to hear that lie had in some decree contributed to the excellent relations which now existed between the two great English-speaking nations. He confessed that for a long time lie had had designs upon a piece of property which has been in the possession of our friends across the Atlantic for more than <0 years, end lie had made several attempts to wrest it from their grasp—so far without success; but be was still hopeful that he would sonm time bring back to its original homo that trophy which stood for the blue ribbon or the sea—the America Cup. He intended to make another-attempt in the very near future.
