MOVING MOUNTAINS
NEW YORK. Get. 7. The Andes Almiiitains are moving eastwards across Argentina at tho rate of a metre (39 inches) or possibly two metres every 1(H) years. This curious statement is made by Dr Bailie Willis, Professor Eineritous of Geology, at Stamford University. Dr AYillis has just returned from South America, whither lie was sent by the Carnegie Institute to siitdy the earthquake which rocked Chili Inst year, lie declares that while the Andes are moving eastwards, California mountains are moving northward. Experiments bv the United Slates Coast ami '■ -oedt.ie survey, he reports, prove that stations established in the California mountains have shifted 2 J” 3 feet in periods of 10 to 15 years, that probability being, since these movements began millions of years ago, that the mountains have slipped many miles. These changes in the earth’s surface, Dr Willis asserts are the result of irresistible pressure exerted from within the earth. To this pressure were dietin' San Franeiseo, the Chilian, and the Japanese earthquakes.
