THOUGHTS FOR THE TIMES.
Return to the .Standard. It was good nows to lionr. .said Professor Comlliil’e, that the time of the re-ado] turn of the gold standard in England was quite near. 'With reference to the slump which followed the boom years, Professor C'ondliffo said in a lecture this week, that his prophecy of two years ago has been vindicated. It was unreasonable to expect that Britain could for long continue to absorb large quantities of New Zealand produce at boom prices, while her European markets remained closed, and unemployment was rife. The near possibility of a return to the gold standard showed that deflation had gone further in Britain than perhaps was generally recognised, and once the gold standard was in use again the automatic force working toward deflation and lower prices would be greatly strengthened.
