YOUNG WOMAN’S DOWNFALL.
TWO BOTTLE* OF WHISKY A DAY. DUNEDIN November 10. At the .Magistrate’s Court this morning Catherine Holt, aged thirty, who was yesterday convicted and di-rh.irged I’m' di'uiikoiiuc.'.s and for having broken her prohibition order, made a reappearance when identical charges were preferred against; her Senior-Sergeant Alathi, son said th/.t alter Holt left the Court yesterday she went out. and became "beastly drunk." The father of tlie licensed gave e;idonfe yesterday to the effect that his daughter laid been in the habit of consuming two bottles of whisky a day. The Senior-Sergeant, in handing the .Magistrate the accused's hank book said that she had been squandering money at a furious rate, amt was n. ;k----tng herself a general nuisance to iier patents. The lather ol aceusi.ii end that his daughter laid threatened to kill herself at Auckland. She was in a c.rnnkcit condition tlmre, ami he brought her to Dunedin. Since being here she had been drinking about two bottles of whisky every day. She had come into about £IOO on dune 2-sth. am' sincc that date she had spent £2llO. The Magistrate: What dees . iie do with the money? Witness: She goes mil and comes hack in a motor-ear. but frequently site hasn't enough left to pay the driver. The .Magistrate: Has she spent al! this on hersalf ? Witness replied that she spent most of Die money on liquor. Asked by the .Magistrate whether she hud anything to say why she should not lie co'mmittcd to a home, the ai'ensed slated that she did not want le la- sent a" ay. and asked for nnothei , banco'. The Magistrate: You have already been given a rlmnc,-. You will lie committed to Pakalon for twelve months and a conviction will he recorded on each charge.
