Tuesday’s “Southland Times'' has the folllnwing:—A well-known local breeder who was taking stock to the Christchurch show rushed on to the Invercargill railway station yesterday morning at 10. 20 to catch the 10.15 train. The train had left up to time. The belated one groaned and collapsed resignedly on a seat. "Conn’ oil, said a friend, who had little respect tor the speed of New Zealand railway trail's “get in my car and I'll take you down the line to catch it.’’ The two arrived at the Mill road station well ahead of the train, and the grateful traveller was enabled to complete Ins journey.

A unique building ot thirteen floors "The Astor,” in Macquarie street, Sydney, was opened recently by the State Premier. Sir George Fuller. The building, which is immediately opposite the Botanical Gardens, comprises 13 floors and a basement, four homes being on each floor. A unique feature is the construct ion of bridges on each floor communicating with the different homes, anil tastefully decorated with flowers on each side. "The Astor’' is said to be the largest reinforced concrete building in Australia.

A medal designed by Mr Roland I lipkins. of Napier, has been chosen to represent New Zealand at the British Empire Exhibition in the Empire competition for the medal design. ’lhe Mother Country is represented by a central figure and the colonies by smaller figures coining from all parts of the world with their contributions. The central figure represents a type of vigorous industry, with a hammer in one hand and a laurel wreath in the other typifying peace and victory. Canada is represented as bringing corn ; India, tin ivory elephant ; .South Africa, diamonds; Australia, fleece: and New Zealand, lamb. The usual sale fixture at the Jnaiigahua Junction salcyards was held last Monday, the yarding comprising 22 prime quality fat cattle from South West land and 18 fat bullocks from the Kopara district. The quality of the South Westland cattle Was all that could lie desired, and they were easily the best line of cattle sent in to these yards this year. The cattle from Koparn were not quite finished. No fat sheep were yarded. The usual bench cl buyers was present, but competition was on the slack side, owing to the coal mines dispute in the Westport district seriously affecting the butchery trade's requirements. A complete clearance ol the yard was affected. Sales were:— 5 fat bullocks at £lB IBs, 13 at ClB, 7 at £l7 15s. 5 at £l2 10s, 8 at £l2, 5 at £lO, -I fat- heifers at £ll 17s fid, 3 fat heifers at £ll 5s .
