STRIKE OF POLICE.

The Disputes Committee at the Trades Hall recommends the police to continue the fight to the end and all the resources of the Labour movement would he thrown behind them for that purpose. At a late hour to-night the city was quiet and the authorities have the position well in hand. SHOPKEEPERS LOSE PROFITS-. MELBOURNE. Nov. G. The, city shopkeepers who annually lay themselves out- for a rich harvest lor.the host of visitors at the Cup Carnival time are heavy sufferers as the result of the rioting. The usual shoppers are chary of visiting the city in its present unsettled panicky state, except as hurried sightseers. They are kept on the move hy tlie largely-aug-mented forces of special constables. Bluejackets are assisting the loyal constables to patrol the streets and guard buildings. The replacing of smashed windows is proceeding. Meantime the people are robbed of window displays bv barricaded fronts. The proprietors are doing their host to attract customers, displaying signs such as ‘’Come Inside!” ‘Buy at Riot Prices!” An aftermath of the damage and looting is sacrificial sales. MELBOURNE. The latest development in the strike is that the Mental Hospital employees threaten to let the mentally afflicted join in the general mix-up. Other') iso there are no further developments. The position is being well handled by the authorities.
