POLICE RAID.

ALLEGED GAMING HOUSE. FOUR ARRESTS AT lIASSAIJ.’S BILLIARD ROOAI. GREYAIOUTH, November 7. Something of a sensation was created in town yesterday at midday when the report spread that a police raid had been made, as the result of which charges of keeping a common gaming bouse, and of assisting to keep a common gaming house are living preferred against James Hassall and John Cain respectively. Shortly bet ore midday yesterday the raid was made by four members of the police ioree, upon the billiard saloon occupied by the iornier, and situated at the corner of AUiert Street and Afawhein Quay. Upon entering the premises at 11.45 a.in., the - raiders - Detective J. B. Young. Senior-Sergeant 1\ J. McCarthy. and Constables T’addy and FlewoL Ivn—found them in Lhe care of Cain, who, if is alleged hy the police, was carrying on business in the absence of liassail. However, some time after the police entered, the latter arrived and entered the premises. The police took possession of what appeared to he betting slips and paraphernalia of various kinds. They also took C 77 7s 9!d it; money. Two other men wore also present, and they were arrested, hut- it is possible that no charge will he preferred against them. 'Upon the arrival of the police. Detective Young took his scat at the telephone. which, it is alleged, rang insistently, but on this point there has been nothing definitely made known. Last evening, the police refused to state if ■ii,v names find been found upon books or papers that had been seized, or whether there was any likelihood of others being .proceeded against by them. The four men who were arrested were subsequently brought belore Air F. IfKilgoiir, J.P.. at the Police Court, hut they were hy him remanded to appear hefore Magistrate AY. Alcldrinn on Monday next. Hassall and Gain wore admitted to bail in sums of £IOO and £SO respectively.
