I’air. .Minister of Education, who has ju.-t returned from a visit to tin l South reports that the idea of the cent in! or consolidated school which is being experimented with b,v the Government- is rapidly growing in favour in the country districts of the South Island. The school committees in that portion of the Dominion no longer appear reluctant io give up their small one teacher schools if they cun scenic letter education and a wider outh ok for tin- ( .hildl'di at a neighbouring consolidated school. The chief diflicnlty, however, yet to he overcome, is the question of transport, tint settlers in several pails of the Dominion are endeavouring to arrange a scheme by which this can he done salisfaetotiiy, Good serviceable vehicles have been devised in the form of commercial motor trucks with covered in bodies, able to transport thirty-six scholars, which is sufficient to make up the complement of an ordinary country school. If the contracts for conveying the children can he arranged at suitable price-, the system will he widely extended at nil early date. COMMITTED FOR TRIAL. MANTEIiTO.X. October JO.
