The annual spring sale of surplus cattle from South Westland was hole, yesterday at Wataroa. The yarding w hich was somewhat smaller than usual comprised 503 head of Hereford cattle which represented little more than half of the yarding usually submitted at this fixture. The reason for same being the inability of some graziers to get their stock to market owing to the floods of the past few days, coupled with the fact that Messrs Cron Bros, the well-known Hereford breeders at the 1 laast were not represented. The quality of the lines offered was up to that of previous years. It is. however, noticeable that the frames and general size of the cattle is apparently getting smaller and there were no big framed cattle similar to those of four or five years ago. A big per coinage of the yarding could he termed fat while the remainder needed little; to make them tit for market. Of the total entry probably 150 represented cows and heifers. Buyers were present from all parts of the Coast, also one from Canterbury and while prices at the opening of the fixture were below those ruling at recent sales, as the fixture progressed they hardened considerably and at the close were quite satisfactory to vendors.
Tiie range of prices were as follows: Fat and forward 3 and 4 year old Herofords to .99 2s (Id, 99 7s Gil, and 911 10s, do. 3 year old steers 97 19s, £8 2s (id, i’S os to £8 12s (id. 25 do. steers Ci 15s. ill 9s. .96 17s (id. .97 10s, £7 15s. 97 17s tid, do. 18 months to two year old 92 19s. 93 7s (id, £3 12s (id, 94. and 91. 17:- (id.
