British and Intercolonial Exhibition at Hokitika.
EXHIBITION COUNCIL MEETING. TUESDAY. OCTOBER 23rd. The Council sat at 7.30 l>.m. Present: Mr AY. Jeffries (Chairman), Messrs AY. AA'ilson, R. AVild, R. F. Pelham, C. S. Dalgliesh, G. Davids at. A. Aitken, D. J. Evans and Dr Teicltelman n. Apology was made for the absence of the Hon 11. L. Michel and Mr AA’. Butler. The minutes of the previous meeting were confirmed and the outward correspondence was read and approved. INAVABD COBBESPONHENCE. From lion. Downie Stewart, not dying his intention to he present tor the opening of tile Exhibition on December loth, and stating he would he accompanied by Miss Stewart.— Received. From T. AA’. Woodroife. Christchurch, reporting with regard to various matters attended to on his return to Christchurch. Received with thanks and approved. Front Same, giving particulars with regard to the supply of electric light ing plant for the huildings.—Receive'.' with satisfaction. From L. l.augeson, Kapiton, stating it would not he possible for him to take up the suggested duties in regard to the Exhibition.—Received. From the Industries Department and the Kaiapoi Woollen Co., confirming particulars in respect to the supply M 500 pairs of blankets for extra accommodation, which is being provided.— Received as satisfactory. From the Director General ol the Department of Agriculture, acknowledging letter ol thanks lor assistance accorded the President on his late visit to Wellington, and stating if official duties permitted, a visit would be paid to the Exhibition while in progress.— Received. From L. S. Fanning, AA’ellington. offering his services iu coninviinn wi ! ' publicity work for the Exhibition. —Received. Front the N.Z. Government Agent, Sydney, acknowledging, supply of prospectus which have been distributed amongst firms likely in require space. - Beeeireil. From the Deputy Commissioner of Stamp Duties in regard to the levy of amusement tax on entettaimnents. and asking for the completion of the necessary forms in relation thereto.— Received; Messrs Berry. From the Secretary of the Industries Department Wellington notifying that the l’ublicity Department would sup] ly photographs and films, and that mode's of the latest steamers of the large shipping companies would also le loaned. Received, Ftum the Hon. G. J. Anderson. Minister of Mines, stating he hoped I<> visit Hokitika during the period ol the Exhibition, but at present was unable to indicate the probable date.—Received. From A. J. AYliite Ltd.. Christchurch and J. AA'. Faulkner. Dunedin, letters with respect to the supply of material for beds and bedding. Received. From Miss E. Connelly. Blenheim, and E. I. Lord, Grey mouth, suggesting Elocutionary and Musical competitions to he held (luting the period of the Exhibition.—Received and rel'eried to the Entertainment Commit lee. Ftom the AA'ostland A. and R. Association stating it was resolved to hold a >!iow at the Racecourse on the 29th. and 30th. January and that the Canterbury Kennel Club had been asked to co-operate in respect to the dog section. -Received. .From Hugh Smith. Roelton, forwarding particulars in regard to a Kilties Entertainment etc.--Received jiul referred to the Entertainment Committee. From AA'. J. Butler. RtcHdent. supplying supplementary report in regard to tip. recent visit to Wellington and Christchurch.—Received with thanks. From the Commonwealth and Dominion Line of Steam Ships stating that the loan of a model steamer had keen agreed to.—Received. From the Secretary of Derry’s Private Band. Christchurch suggesting an interview in respect to arrangements to visit the Exhibition. —Received. The Chairman was authorised while in Christchurch next, week to cruder with the Band Executive in regard to terms and conditions. From the Otago and Canterbury Art Societies supplying particulars of ph‘tarcs which would be available for Exhibition at Hokitika.—Received with thanks and referred to the Art Committee. Front Turnbull and Jones Ltd. Christchurch, enquiring in respect to the display of wireless equipment.— Received and referred to the wireless section of the Entertainment Committee. From the Secretary of the Industrial Association. Christchurch, in respect to decorations available.—Received and referred to Mr Woodroft'c. for lurther information in respect to sasut*. From the Textile Bag Co. Christchurch forwarding supply of sewn grey calico for use on the buildings. From the District Traffic Manager of Railways. Greymouth, in respect to the free carriage of exhibits on open lines. Received. Necessary certificates to le forwarded to exhibitors for signature. . From Mrs Leo Manoy. Molueka. with regard to exhibiting in the Art section. —Received and referred to the Art Committee. Mr AA'ilson reported on behali ol the Accommodation Commit tee.
