AUSTRALIAN AND N.Z. CARLE ASSOCIATION. SLANDER ACTION. ARCHDEACON AND LAW CLERK. LONDON. Oct. 10. Before Mr Justice Darting and a jury ex-Archdeacon Wakeford sued Henry AVrignt. managing clerk for the solicitors employed b.v the Bishop of Lincoln in recent proceedings before the Consistory Court for damages tor alleged slander. It was alleged that Wright said to the clergyman : “I know John AVakeford is guilty. I myself traced him to-various hotels with women.” , . , Wright is also alleged to have said on another occasion:—“Wakeford is a very nice fellow if he would only keep the seventh commandmant.” Defendant denied slander, and pleaded that it was bona fide fair comment without malice. HUNDRED YEARS OF E.MPIEE. LONDON. Oct. 16. In accordance with the wishes of the Lord Mayor elect, the theme of the Lord Mayor's Show will he—-“ One Hundred Years of Empire.” A huge globe will show the present extent of the Empire, and the progress of industry. naval and other developments since 1623.
