Tut path for prohibition appears, to be a very thorny one in tho I’nitcd States. A New York message says that the City Commissioners of AVashington, sent a demand to the United States Commissioner of Prohibition. whose headqmirteis are in AYashington. that he should discharge several of bis agents, who were charged with accepting bribes from “bootleggers.” mil that a greater effort should l>e made id enforce tho prohibition law in the city. The Federal Council of the Churches, representing all the Protestant ecclesiastical bodies in America, has called Upon its membership to support the movement to compel the authorities to enforce prohibition. The council declares that unusual laxity exists amongst those* whose* duty it is to euforce the law, and church organisations must revive the war against* liquor, which the* elm relies fought five years ago. The council hopes, also, to enlist all Jewish organisations in this campaign. The regular and Special Grand juries of New York City, with a calendar of *lO2 eases of violating tlie prohibition law, roturhed indictments against only two persons, dismissing the remainder. The Judge, in dismissing the juries, declared that the greatest menaces to law and order in America were Communism and the situation created by the prohibition laws. No doubt disorganisation such as the foregoing reveals had its effect in regard to th 0 recent poll in Queensland, where the question lias been laid to rest lor n protracted period.
Ttikue have been several indications that the Exhibition Council is bent upon discharging its work in connection with the large event to operate here over the Christmas and New Year holidays, thoroughly. The illustrated poster the Exhibition authorities aie issuing, is another reminder of the level at which the work is being carried through. It is a very fine pictorial piece of color printing, distinctive in design and color, and certainly calculated to arrest the eye. The poster is to lie displayed at the principal railway stations of the Dominion, all tourist agencies, shipping offices, motor garages, and generally at places where the public most do congregate. It is a very fine effort. It is the sort of poster Westland requires to send abroad to a, rest the attention of the traveller and holiday maker. A similar, but not a better class of poster, is issued by tlio Government in regard to favored tourist resorts, but. appeals for alike kind of poster for the scenic attractions of Westland, have been refused. Now the private enterprise of the Exhibition authorities has filled the bill excellently. The poster is one fit to adorn any hoarding or place of interest. It is artistic and just colorful enough to be striking. It will give outsiders a first impression of the lines, on which the Exhibition is to be run. and the first impression will lie certainly pleasing.
It is very gratifying to learn, as was disclosed at the Borough Council meeting tm Friday night, that the water supply service for the town, continues to be so ample. The Mayor stated that tho reservoir is running over invariably. '1 his pleasing and very proper state of affairs has lasted now for several weeks and if the careful attention continues to he devoted to the line of pipes, the excellent and adequate supply of water should be maintained. The result is what was originally designed when the water works were installed, but from one cause and another, defects crept in, and the service became very seriously inadequate. Now that the authorities have a better grip of the matter, it is to be hoped the position for the next few months will lie maintained. Over the coming holiday season there will be a heavy demand upon the resources, and as the position is so very good just now, it should be maintained in that acceptable state. The Borough staff is to Ix 3 congratulated on the improvements effected, and to earn the 1 briber goodwill of the public, it will be for the staff to see that the service is
not. impaired in am- way during the period of special demand over the coming holiday season.
